Life does not come with rule books. We make meaning of the world based on our upbringings and situations. But often there are times when we loose the plot and wonder why we are struck in a mess. Everything seems chaotic. For some, philosophy nerve is triggered and we end up thinking about life. Most of us do not know why we are born and what is our purpose. In any case, we need some thing to help us get through tough situations.
A personal trick that I use to navigate through challenging times is the Pot theory. It is a very simple one and is as follows: All humans are born with 3 pots: Pleasure Pot, Pain Pot and Knowledge Pot. 2 of these pots are for us to empty in our lifetime, Pleasure and Pain. The third pot is for us to fill. You also are born with a spoon called free will. Let us examine these in detail.
Pots to be emptied
Pleasure and Pain pots MUST be emptied before you are allowed to die. You cannot transfer contents of these pots to others’ pots. You can however allow or deny others to see the contents of this pot. You can use your spoon i.e. your free will and decide how much and where you will scoop out the contents from this pot. Let me give some examples.
Exercising is painful but if you do not scoop out that pain from the pot when you are young, it will remain in the pot. But remember you have to empty it before end of life, and when you don’t empty while you are young, you will scoop out that pain in your old age: diseases and hospital.
Studying is painful but if you volunteer to swallow this pain on daily basis, you are very likely to widen your expertise and be more eligible for jobs.
Watching movies, spending time with loved one’s, going out on trips, spending on items we don’t need but like, buying luxurious items these are all from our pleasure pots. Some of us have a lot of content in this pot and some of us have little content. But like the Pain pot, the contents of this pot too has to be emptied before we die.
Pots to be filled
One pot which is highly beneficial is the knowledge pot. The more you fill it, the better the quality of your life. This knowledge pot can be filled by interacting with nature and fellow human beings, by reading and by travelling.
This pot is slightly different from the other two pots in the sense that you can share the contents of this pot. The more you share the better you get. And there is also no limit to how much you can fill in this pot.
Choose wise in emptying and filling your pots. I hope you find this theory useful.
