Rishyashringa
Rishyashringa was the son of sage Vibhandaka. Rishyashringa played a very pivotal role in Ramayana. King Dasharatha was childless. On the advice of his ministers, king Dasharatha decided to perform Putrakameshti Yagna for begetting sons. Sumantra, the chief minister of Dasharatha narrates the story of Rishyashringa and suggests that the rishi be brought to Ayodhya for performing the yagna. The story of Rishyashringa is as follows.
Long ago, kingdom of Anga faced severe drought, threating the very existence of land. The king of Anga, Romapada, learns through his advisors that the only way to end the drought is to bring Rishyashringa to his kingdom. It was believed that Rishyashringa’s presence could bring rain and prosperity to the land. But the task was not that simple.
Vibhandaka and his son lived in isolation in the forest, away from human civilization. Rishyashringa was known for his ascetic practices and deep devotion to his penance. Due to his father’s strict principles, Rishyashringa grew up without any contact with the outside world, including women.
King Romapada, on the advise of his ministers, sends a group of beautiful courtesans to entice Rishyashringa and lure him to the kingdom of Anga. The plan succeeds and Rishyashringa’s arrival at Anga brings rain and prosperity to the land. King Romapada, greets Rishyashringa and asks for a boon that he would not incur the warth of Vibandaka. He then gives his daughter, Shanta, in marriage to sage Rishyashringa.
