The greatest finger

In this post I would like to share with my readers a story that I heard from my Guru.

Once upon a time, the fingers not having much to do started chatting. They wanted to know who among them was the greatest? Each finger presented their reasons only to be dismissed by the other fingers. What started as a fun conversation soon turned into a huge argument. With the conversation going nowhere, one finger suggested they should go to the creator and present their arguments so the creator will decide who is the greatest.

When they arrived at the hall of the creator, they paid their obeisance and declared the purpose of their visit. The creator, with a smile on face, asked the fingers to present their case one after the other.

The Thumb finger said ‘My lord, I think I am the greatest because without me, no heavy object can be lifted. I represent Strength and without strength, a man is nothing.’

The Index finger said ‘Dear lord, I am the one who points at different things. I am raised when some one has to be disciplined or told off. I represent Authority and Power. Without Power no nation or state can be run. So I am the greatest.’

The Middle finger said ‘Oh lord, what is the use of anything that lacks beauty. I am right in the middle, two to my right and two to my left. I am the central one, the important one, the beautiful one. So that makes me the greatest.’

The Ring finger said ‘Lord, golden rings are worn on me. I am the one who enhances a person’s beauty by carrying the weight of gold and precious stones. I am certainly the greatest.’

The Little finger said nothing. Seeing this the creator asked why the little finger was not presenting his case. The little finger said ‘ My lord, I have nothing to do with this argument. I am not interested in being the greatest’. The lord asked ‘Why then have you come with the other fingers?’. The little finger responded ‘I am here because I wanted to see you’. The creator was puzzled and asked ‘Why you wanted to see me?’. The Little finger responded ‘I wanted to thank you’. The creator wished to know why the little finger what the thanks was for? The little finger said ‘I am grateful for the opportunity that you have given me. Although I am the smallest, when people visit temples or greet scholars, elders, they do so with folded hands. And when they do so, I am the first one to get full view of the divine or of the scholar or elder. I am not the strongest, nor powerful, not beautiful nor do am I wealthy, but all these are behind me when a human prays with folded hands’.

Moral: Gratitude is the biggest gift. Wear it on you for life and you will be the greatest.
