January is named after Roman god Janus, the god of new beginnings. Every great person who has achieved something, planned or accidental, made a beginning at some point. Fortunate are those who take a pause, self – reflect, introspect and make new beginnings. And could there be any better time than new year to do this? As the year ends and new one begins, it’s a perfect time to recollect inspirational stories from across the world, learn from them and redefine your goals or path.
Being born in one of the oldest religions of the world, I have grown up listening to tons of remarkable tales. I would like to share one such tale today and pray that it fuels you to achieve your dreams.
One of the greatest beginnings from Hindu scriptures is the Samudra manthan or churning of ocean. The Asuras and Devas with the desire for divine nectar churned the ocean. They got help from lord Vishnu himself who in kurma avatara supported the mountain on his back and used vasuki snake as the rope. Due to the churning a lot of material came out of the ocean including poison which was swallowed by Lord Shiva. And at last came the divine nectar of immorality. Lord Vishnu in the avatar of mohini distributed the Nectar to devas.

When we draw parallels to our life, we realise that our life itself is the ocean. Devas and Asuras are positive and negative thoughts, vasuki is our intellect. Kurma is our consciousness. We either progress or experience setbacks and it all boils down to the dominant thoughts. Setbacks and failures are poison which is unavoidable and with support from friends and family we can overcome setbacks. Remember shiva did not swallow or spit out the poison, similarly on facing failures we should not abandon our
mission or get depressed and continue to work relentlessly till we reach our goal which is the nectar. Success can put you off track at times and cause your ego to build up. Staying humble and having gratitude is the way to have continued success and I hope you will be blessed with such a success this new year.
