This is the story of Thriveni who runs a very successful hotel, SLV Coffee thindi, in partnership with her husband Narayana. It is a story of persistence, hard work and dedication. The couple started off from zero and today run a very popular eatery. How did they start of? what challenges do they face and how they over come? what lessons do they have to share? read on to find more.

Thriveni was born and raised in hangarakatte, Kundapura taluk, Karnataka. She has two brothers, one older and one younger. Her ancestors have been farmers. Due to her family circumstances, she dropped out of higher education and married Narayan at the age of 18. Post marriage Thriveni moved to Bangalore where her husband was working as a cook in a hotel.
Their family life is just similar to that of many others. They have seen lots of ups and downs, happy and sad times. They are blessed with two children. But what is special about Thriveni is the values she upholds and the principle of her life.
With lot of dreams, hope and motivation, Narayana and Thriveni started their own hotel. Within weeks of starting hotel a series of personal and professional incidents occurred resulting in huge losses and they had to shut down the hotel. Narayana dint give up on his dreams and asked Thriveni if she would support him to start and run a hotel. Thriveni agreed and today 8 years later, their hotel is a massive hit among locals. They have regular customers who queue to be served their favourite idli vada.

Thriveni’s day starts very early at around 4:30 -5 in the morning and she works non stop till 11 in the night. While her husband manages the hotel kitchen she manages its operations. She has no MBA or no prior training in hotel management and yet very efficiently operates the business. The secret to the couple’s success is their values. Their business thrives around their values more than strategies. Their customers keep returning for the quality of food, hygiene and value to money which are products of the principles and values which the couple uphold. Her core values are:
Value 1: Work hard
Long hours and physically intensive labour is not unknown to people working in food industry and many other industries. Triveni never shies away from work. She is always ready to take on multiple roles if needed.
Thriveni also stresses on teaching importance of hard work to children. She encourages her children to help them during weekends. They gain invaluable experience in dealing with people and situations.
Value 2: Embrace difficulties.
Thriveni says hard times are temporary. Accept and face challenges, problems, or obstacles with a positive and determined attitude. Believe that good times are ahead and look forward to it.
Thriveni sees both process and people challenges in her job. She says it is hard at times but she has learnt that dealing with problems can be a lot easier by staying calm.
Value 3: Be willing to Adjust and Adapt.
With increasing eco-consciousness amongst people, Thriveni adapted sustainable practices at her hotel. They serve their customers on areca palm plates.
Value 4: Clear goals
Thriveni and her husband have a very clear goal. Their aim to serve every customer clean, fresh and healthy food. She says ‘I will never serve any customer, food which I cannot consume’. The couple believes in simplicity and are content with their establishment. Many of us would might choose to expand the business when we see success, but this humble couple have chosen not to open another outlet. For them, its not a business, it is work which they worship.
Thriveni has sacrificed a lot. Due to her demanding job, She has missed many family events, she has not been able to take holidays very often, She does not get good rest but she never complains. She is committed stand by her husband, to support him through thick and thin.
Over the last 8 years, she has interacted with many people and many of her customers are regular. She genuinely cares for her customers, she is friendly, mindful of their needs and priorities and works to provide them a positive experience. Hence they return.
