Face of Courage – Dilani Sriranjan

A young, innocent girl endures regular beatings from someone close to her in silence for years until one day, with the help of her aunt, she manages to escape and find freedom. That freedom too is not long, destiny puts her again the same house with the same abusive person. She is subjected to traumatizing situations. Finally luck shines upon her and she moves to live with her aunt. This is the story of Dilani Sriranjan. She has shown courage, navigated through the challenges and accomplished her dance goals.

Dilani, was born in Paris, France. She is the oldest of three children in her family. Her Mother, Nalini, is a very brave and hardworking woman who has overcome many challenges for the sake of her children. Growing up, Money was always a problem at home and her mother would often borrow money to keep the family running. But Nalini never gave up on her kids. There were days she would just survive with chewing gum and save the food for her kids. As a young kid, Dilani was oblivious to the situation and would ask for toys and treats. But it did not take too long for Dilani to realise how much her mother struggled. A strong mother like Nalini can only raise a much stronger daughter.

When she moved to UK, Dilani had to adjust to the new place. No challenge was too big for her, she learnt the language, completed her secondary school , took part time jobs working in TESCO with her mother so she could further fund her passion (more about it later) . At present, Dilani works as a teacher in Nursery. She loves babies. She says she forgets everything else when she is around babies. Another main reason why she chose this job is because she wants to ensure, in any way she can, that no other child goes through what she went through. It is a delight to see her around babies. They love her, My daughter loves her too.

Despite bearing such deep scars, she exudes a pleasant aura. Whether you meet her early in the day or late at night, her energy remains constant, and she always speaks with a warm tone.

Dilani is also a Bharatanatyam dancer. When Dilani was 4 years of age, she often used to pass in front of a Bharatanatyam class and expressed her desire to learn the art. Her mother sold her jewellery to fulfil Dilani’s Bharatanatyam dream. Dilani immersed herself completely in dance training. She excelled. She trained for 9 years with her teacher Sharmila in France. When she moved to UK, she trained under Kasturi for another 3 years. At the age of 18, she went back to France to do her arangetram with her teacher Sharmila.

Dilani wants to move back to France one day and start her own nursery. She wants to have her own kids at some point in future. At present, she is focused on her job and is very happy in life being there and taking care of her mom and guiding her siblings.

Dear Reader, the key takeaway from Dilani’s life is that no matter how dire your current situation may be, keep your hopes alive, continue working towards improvement, and never give up. If you have experienced past scars, use your lessons to help others going through similar situations. Thank you for your time.
