A life dedicated to 7 notes – Shobha Sagar. Part 3 – Q & A

Today, in the last post of this series, we’ll be exploring the process of creating a music video. We’re grateful to Shobha for sharing her knowledge, and we hope that this information can be useful to someone.

Q: What are the minimum requirements to start a career in singing?

Shobha: One should ideally learn music under a guru. Becoming a singer requires dedication and practice, and it is recommended to practice for at least 2 hours every day

I would also recommend practicing Hindustani music with a keyboard. From a technical perspective, one must invest in a microphone and a laptop to create videos. Additionally, having a mentor is beneficial.

Q:  If someone has learned music and wants to start promoting themselves, where and how should they begin?

Shobha: To begin, it’s advisable to participate in local events and take part in competitions at school, college, university, taluk or city level. Although you may not win every competition, it’s essential to receive feedback on each performance to identify areas for improvement.

Once you have established a presence, you can join free promotion pages on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. Record your songs and share them on singing groups to increase your visibility.

Q: What tools are best for recording and editing video songs?

Shobha: For beginners, a basic Android phone can be used to record videos, and a microphone can be used to record voice. InShot is a free app that can be used for video editing and effects.

For slightly more advanced practitioners, I would recommend PowerDirector for video editing. You could also do outdoor shoots and mix audio while editing.

Other useful tools include ProTools and Logic Pro. Use Karaoke for background music. If you’re unable to download it as an mp3, you can use the Moises app. This app takes in a song and removes the vocals, producing a Karaoke track.

For the best audio quality, I recommend using the Focusrite Scarlett audio interface with a microphone.

Finally, it’s a good idea to record songs in a room with minimal echo. You could use any room in your house as a studio, just ensure that the doors and windows are closed and that external noise is minimized.

Q: What is the estimated investment required for the above setup?

Shobha: The initial investment required for the above setup is at least 40,000 INR.

Q: What are the legal aspects(copyrights, IP rights) one has to be aware while singing a song composed by others?

Shobha: While uploading cover songs to YouTube, give credits to original singer, composer and studio. If you fail to do so you could get a Copyright strike. Within 90 days if you get 3 strikes YouTube dissolves your account.

Q: What should be the ideal duration of videos?

Shobha: For beginners I would recommend doing YouTube Shorts – these are 30 secs to 1 min videos. You can do this to get good response and get more subscribers

Once you have a regular viewers base you can start making videos over 5 mins

Q: How much time does it take to record, edit, upload and market one video?

Shobha: For audio recording it takes 1 day. Editing and mixing video usually takes up to 3 days.

Q: Would you like to share any tips on marketing strategies.

Shobha: Make sure video quality is good, use good tools.

Post videos on Instagram for wider audience reach and Boost content in Instagram.

Q: Anything you would like to say?

Shobha: I would like to thank Gangadhar swami who shared his valuable knowledge on some software tools. I would also like to thank my guru Vasudha sharma. And finally all this would not have been possible without the support of my husband Prashant Sagar and my daughter Nidhi Sagar.
